Specialty Classes
For Adults and High Schoolers

Specialty Classes are 2 to 4-hour thematic classes
Unless otherwise specified, all classes are held online

 

How can I sign up?

1- If you are unsure of your level, please take our free Placement Test first.  We will get back to you within 48 hours to discuss your best class options. 

2- Once you know your level, check the schedule below for days and times.  Please note your Class Title; you'll need it when you sign up.  

3- You will be able to register for the class online using a credit or debit card.  Alternatively, you can mail your registration form and check to Alliance Française, attn: Class Registration, 5510 Munford Rd, Raleigh, NC 27612.               

4- Current membership is required from all adult students.  Click on Membership to sign up or renew.

 

What do class codes mean?

French classes in Alliance Française chapters around the world follow the guidelines of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). 

The CEFRL sets language competency levels as follows.   

A1 = Beginner
A2 = Elementary
B1 = Intermediary
B2 = Independent
C1 = Advanced
C2 = Proficient

French Grammar 2.2

Subjunctive Made Easy
Le French subjonctif might feel scary and complex at first.  However, you'll find that a few tips and some practice will go a long way towards feeling more confident using it in everyday interactions. The class is taught in French.

Levels B1/B2

French Freedom Poets

Freedom has proved to be a popular topic for poets throughout the ages.  In this class, we'll look at the lives and works of four French poets of the mid-XXth century: Jacques Prévert, Paul Eluard, Boris Vian and Maurice Carême.  Caught in the drama of the unfathomable modern inner life mixed and matched with the whole new political landscape of two world wars, all four deeply engaged with the ideas of freedom and resistance.  The class is taught in French.

Revue de Presse

In this class, you'll discuss the latest French press briefs and selected articles that cover current events in France. The goal is to improve your understanding of French current events and improve your language skills by analyzing and discussing media coverage. We encourage participants to express themselves and share their opinions during the discussions, creating an interactive and enriching experience.  The class is taught in French.

Review of Level A1

This class is designed for students who are soon completing, or have completed, the French A1 level, and would like to review the main concepts introduced in the A1 course.  The focus is on high frequency grammar and vocabulary.

Review of Level A2

This class is designed for students who are soon completing, or have completed, the French A2 level, and would like to review the main concepts introduced in the A2 course.

Paris Famous Architects 1

Over the course of the last several centuries, Paris was shaped by numerous architects who have earned widespread acclaim for their designs and work.  In this class, the first of a series, we'll look at the lives and works of four architects: Haussman, Violet-le-Duc, Leoh Ming Pei and Le Corbusier.  The class is taught in French.

French Through Role Playing

In this class, you'll use role plays and simulations to bring the skills of reading, speaking, listening, and pronunciation together.  The focus is less on form than it is on meaning and fluency.

French Literature: JP Sartre

Jean-Paul Sartre is a French philosopher whose versatility spans all forms of literary genre, from novels to plays, journalism to literary criticism.  In this class, we'll focus on his short drama "Huit-Clos" performed in 1944 and published in 1945.  The one act play is thought to be the clearest example and metaphor for existentialism, a form of philosophical inquiry that Sartre popularized throughout his life.  The class is taught in French.

Level B1+ and up

French Phonetics 1

Struggling with French pronunciation?   This class will help you with the most common challenges that English speakers meet when learning French.  You will also study the basic principles of French phonetics and acquire a more discerning ear when listening to everyday spoken French.  The class is taught in Englsih with smatterings of French.

All levels 
Saturday, 1 to 3pm, May 20 & 27

French Phonetics 2

Building up on ear training and clearer pronunciation, this class will introduce the basics of French intonation.  The class is taught in English with smatterings of French.  You don't need to have completed Phonetics 1 to join Phonetics 2, however you do need to test at, or above, level A1.2.
