October Newsletter
Thank you to everyone who joined us at the General Assembly yesterday! It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces and meet new ones. Your energy, curiosity, and support mean everything to us; we hope you left feeling inspired.
Now, on to October... They’re here. Pumpkins. Sprouting overnight on porches, crowding grocery aisles, sneaking into your coffee cup,
multiplying like some great orange uprising. While the gourds plot their takeover, the Alliance has cooked up its own October surprises: fun
classes, lively events, and plenty of reasons to leave the pumpkin patch behind, at least for a day or two.
This month’s highlights include:
- Guided Tour at NCMA (Oct. 3, in French): The grand finale of our three-part series on recent American acquisitions with docent Diane Beckman. Thought-provoking, dazzling, and just dramatic enough to keep up with the great pumpkin uprising outside.
- Paris Noir (Oct. 10, online): Fellow member Frachele Scott explores how Blackness, memory, and cultural hybridity are expressed in French art institutions. Frachele will highlight recent exhibitions at the Palais de Tokyo and Centre Pompidou in Paris. Art, history and cultural insights guaranteed, with zero chance of getting lost in the metro.
- Wine Tasting in Wilmington (Oct.11, 5pm): Join our Wilmington team for a lively tasting class at Total Wine. You’ll swirl, sniff, and sip your way through France’s most iconic wine regions. No pumpkins, just grapes doing their thing and your taste buds having a very civilized party.
- Cendrillon at the NC Opera (Oct. 19): Never been to the opera? This is your chance! Don’t miss Massenet’s dazzling, romantic twist on Cinderella. AF members enjoy an exclusive 10% ticket discount and a special welcome reception at 1:00 PM, an hour before the performance, with the rare chance to meet Eric Mitchko, General Director of North Carolina Opera, and conductor Joseph Mechavich.
And just when you thought pumpkin spice was the biggest treat this month, we’ve got another one: our library is
now open every Saturday from 9:30am to 12:30pm. Swing by, browse some books, and pretend you totally planned to
be this productive on a Saturday morning. Huge thanks to our amazing volunteers - because of them, even our shelves are smiling!
October is also the perfect time to sharpen your French. Our fall course starts this week; whether you’re brushing up on conversation,
grammar, or simply want to make your pet look at you with admiration.
Art, music, wine, books, classes and a little pumpkin chaos; exactly how fall should be!
