Bonjour Novembre
November is here; the month when sweaters crawl out of hibernation and daylight saving time reminds us that someone, somewhere, really needed more coffee when they came up with the idea. As Thanksgiving approaches, we’re feeling extra grateful for you, our amazing students and members, who help us celebrate French language and culture across North Carolina.
This month, the Alliance has cooked up a deliciously French lineup to keep your spirits high, your hearts warm, and your calendars suspiciously full.
We start with a Pétanque Contest (already booked solid - clearly, competition is fierce!) followed by the online conference: French "Polar" (Crime Fiction, not penguins) with journalist Hélène Crié-Wiesner on November 7 at 12pm. Think gritty detectives, smoky cafés, and a dash of existential despair (France, in a nutshell.)
That same evening, head to Duke University for a Tribute to Ravel; a Night of Dazzling Duos featuring violinist Gabriel Richard and cellist Jesús Castro-Balbi. The concert begins at 8pm, and yes, it’s free for all (music to our ears!).
If you prefer brushstrokes to bowstrokes, join our Art Tours in French - not one, but two! On November 8, discover The Book of Esther in the Age of Rembrandt at the NCMA with docent Diane Beckman (museum ticket required). Then on November 16, don your (metaphorical) sunglasses for Color Triumphant at the Ackland Museum, where Katherine Shen will guide you through the Robertsons’ vibrant modern art collection.
Raise your glass on November 13 for the Franco-American Wine Challenge with partner Raleigh Sister Cities, and November 21 for a Beaujolais Nouveau Celebration at L'Ecole/French School of Raleigh.
And finally, on November 22, our brand-new Ciné-Club makes its grand debut with the heartwarming classic Les Choristes. The film will be shown in French with English subtitles, followed by a lively bilingual discussion. Bring your inner critic - and maybe a foldable chair for extra comfort.
From mysterious crime fiction to art, music, wine, and film, there’s something for everyone - even if your greatest French skill is spotting a ripe Camembert from across the room.
