Radical Clay showcases the work of 36 contemporary female ceramic artists from the private collection of Carol and Jeffrey Horvitz, highlighting their technical mastery and bold exploration of clay's expressive potential. Spanning generations, these artists have pushed the boundaries of the medium with inventive, often surprising forms that reflect individual visions and remarkable skill.
Historically excluded from Japan’s male-dominated ceramic tradition, women began gaining access to formal art education in the 1970s, sparking a surge of innovation. The works on view reflect this shift, featuring nature-inspired shapes and pioneering decorative techniques that defy convention.
