The Time Is Always Now: Artists Reframe the Black Figure is an exhibition featuring 23 contemporary African diasporic artists who
celebrate the Black figure through themes of double consciousness, historical persistence, and vitality. Inspired by James Baldwin’s essay
on desegregation, the exhibition highlights the richness, joy, and complexity of Black life while challenging traditional art historical perspectives.
Showcasing works by artists such as Michael Armitage, Jordan Casteel, Kerry James Marshall, and Amy Sherald, the exhibition shifts the focus from merely “looking at” Black figures to truly “seeing through” the eyes of Black artists, emphasizing representation and the ongoing dialogue on the presence and absence of Black figures in art history.
The tour itself is free. However, attendees need to purchase their tickets for the special exhibition from the museum, Click HERE to purchase your ticket.
