
Created in 1998 by the Paris Ile-de-France CCI, the Test d’Evaluation de Français (TEF) is an international benchmark test that measures your level of knowledge and skills in French.
Why take the TEF?
The TEF provides confirmation of one’s level of competency in French in any professional, academic or mobility-related context.
Based on your goals, you will select one of these TEF tests:

TEF Study — To study in France; to certify your level of French for work

TEF Naturalisation — To obtain French citizenship

TEF Canada — To emigrate to Canada or for Canadian citizenship

TEFAQ — To emigrate to Quebec
Test Format
The TEF consists of 5 sections. Except for the Oral Expression, all sections are on computer.

Oral comprehension (CO) 25-40 min

Written comprehension (CE) 45-60 min

Oral Expression (EO) 10-15 min

Written Expression (EE) 30-60 min

Vocabulary and syntax (LS) 30 min

Test Results
The TEF grades candidates using a scale of 7 levels that range from 0+ level (basic skills) to level 6 (complete control).
A certificate of results, valid for 2 years, is issued for the applicant and shows the scores on each section of the test.
A candidate may take the test as many times as he/she wants, however, a two-month waiting period is required between two sessions.
