November 2019

November 3, 2019

Hello Dear AF Members!

"Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower." wrote Albert Camus. He never even got a glimpse of North Carolina glorious fall colors.  Neither did he ever get an extra hour of sleep early November.  We do!  That's how lucky we are. Something to remember as the days grow shorter and Thanksgiving get closer. Here is a preview of our November program:

SPECIAL EVENTS

  • What better way to start the month than with a cooking class?  'Variations on Gougères and Profiteroles' is the first of Cathy Monnet's Easy Cuisine workshops this season.  The workshop will take place on Saturday 2 November, 2pm, at a member's home in North Raleigh.  Hurry!  There are still 2 spots left! Register here.

  • 'The Making of Tapestry, from French Gobelins' and Aubusson's tapestries to modern designs made in America today' will be our cultural highlight of the month, on Thursday 7 November, 7pm, at the Alliance.  Hélène Crié-Wiesner, journalist and tapestry weaver, will show us how we can create spectacular craftwork using traditional 'haute lisse' techniques. A selection of her tapestries will be on display that night.

  • There are still 3 spots available for the guided tour in French of the Riviera/Kahlo special exhibition scheduled on November 20th, 12:00pm. At the North Carolina Museum of Art.  Register here.

MONTHLY EVENTS

  • Whether you are a native speaker or a student of French, you are all welcome at our  Welcome Café on Tuesday 5 November, 10:30am.  You will be sure to enjoy this opportunity to "converser, tout simplement".  At the Alliance.  Walk-ins welcome!

  • With a little help from Mother Nature, we hope we'll be able to go on a Hike in French at Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve in Cary. Sunday 17 November, 2pm.  Register here.

  • Ciné-Club is back with SOUVENIR, a romantic comedy from 2016 featuring Isabelle Hupert and Kevin Azais.  Jeff Dermott will host the event on Wednesday 20 November, 7:15pm at his home theater in Cary. In SOUVENIR, lsabelle Huppert plays an old Eurovision singer who fell into oblivion decades earlier, and now finds love through her voice.   Register here

  • Club de Lecture will meet on Thursday, October 21st, 10:00am, and review "La tête en friches" by Marie-Sabine Roger.  The book inspired the 2010 movie 'My Afternoons with Margueritte' and tells the story of an illiterate man who bonds with an older, well-read woman.  Interestingly, the author found out we'd be discussing her book; she is eager to get our feedback!  No registration required.

  • Our next Cercle de Convivialité will be hosted by an AF member in Raleigh on Sunday, November 10th, from 4:30 to 6:30pm. Open to all, this is a moment of casual exchange for all levels of French.  You will receive the exact address upon registration here.

Last but not least, we are planning a Beaujolais Nouveau Event on Friday 22 November, 6pm, at the Alliance.  More details in our next letter.

On this happy note, we would like to kickstart our Thanksgiving season by thanking all of you for being invaluable supporters of Alliance Française de Raleigh-Durham-Chapel!  Special thanks to our wonderful volunteers who run the library and Culturethèque: Jack Brickley, Timothy Seigler, Kristen Wilson, Lisë Osvold, Qirui Zhang, Mary Roberts and John McLelland. Without you, we couldn't do it.  It is as simple as that.

Happy spooky time tomorrow, and happy November to all!

The Alliance team.
