Newsletter February 2019

February 1, 2019

French version here

Dear Members of the Alliance française of Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill,

Before outlining the activities we have planned for February, we have three important topics to bring to your attention:

1 - We are adding a new section to our newsletter: “Maison de France”. Here you will find public events organized by the partners with whom we share our offices: L’Ecole French School of Raleigh, the French American Chamber of Commerce Carolinas (FACCC), and the honorary Consul. This section will always be found at the end of the monthly newsletter.

2 - The walls of la Maison de France are bare and depressing now that the beautiful colored paintings of Bernadette Morris are gone, themselves having succeeded the stunning photos of May 68.  Next, we would love to showcase the photography talent of our members and their friends:

When you visited France - if you’ve had the pleasure - you likely took pictures of places, landscapes, or people. In your photo libraries, you probably have shots that

you’re proud of. And some - don’t be shy - that might even be worth enlarging, printing, framing, and displaying…. on the walls of the Alliance française!

Note: “France” also includes its overseas territories and “départements,” the DOM-TOMs. So dive into your archives, sort through them, and bring us your most beautiful photos.

3 - The AF is always in need of funds to improve, and you can help without writing a single check: if you’re ever buying something through Amazon, please consider going through Amazon Smile! A part of your purchase (a tiny fraction, but still) will go to the Alliance.

It’s very simple: sign up by clicking on the link at the bottom of the Alliance website’s homepage, and select your desired charity - in this case, “Alliance Française de Raleigh Inc”. Each time you want to purchase something, instead of going to

amazon.com, go to smile.amazon.com instead. And our Alliance of Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill will automatically receive a percent of your purchase, without any additional cost to you.

We have some great programming lined up for the spring, in March and April. But first, the activities we have planned for February:

  • The Welcome Café will take place on the first Tuesday of the month (February 5th) at 10:30 AM. Come chat in French, about anything and everything.

  • Our Oenology Workshop was quite a success in December, so we are bringing it back on Sunday February 10th at 3:00 PM. To learn everything about wine, how it’s made, and how to drink it, sign up on our website.

  • The “A table” workshop is also coming back by popular demand. It will be held over four sessions, each Thursday from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM. You can choose to participate in only one session if you wish. Sign up now.

-The Ciné-Club presents “Lou, journal infime”, a movie by Julien Neel, staring Ludivine Sagnier, on February 13th. Let us know through the website if you plan on coming.

-The Cercle de Convivialité will be on Sunday February 17th at 3:00 PM in Raleigh, hosted by our friend Gretchen. Sign up to receive the address.

-A Museum in French visit is scheduled for February 26th at 10:30 AM at the NC Museum of Art. Reserve your spot on our website.

And don’t forget our recurring monthly events: the Speak Easy (February 8th at 4:00 PM) and the Apéro’Singalong (every Thursday at 6:30 PM, except on February 14th), featuring a new setlist. And of course, Yoga in French: If you are an experienced yogi, or would like to start, why not do it in French, Tuesdays at 6:30 PM, at the Alliance ? Lastly, would anyone like to take charge of leading our Book Club?

To wrap this letter up, a reminder about our request for help first sent out in December: the Administrative Council of the Alliance needs some technical knowledge, specifically to improve our website. Would anyone be able to donate a couple hours of their time?

Thank you all for your continued support,

                                                  L’équipe de l’Alliance

Maison de France’s Events

In the context of the “great national debate” currently taking place in France, the Consular Office in Raleigh will host Dominique Lemoine and Elisabeth Marchal, consular advisors for our region based in Atlanta. The debate will take place the evening of February 22.  Additional information on this event will be provided by Maire-Claire Ribeill, the honorary consul.
