September Newsletter

Dear Alliance Française Member,

The September full moon kicks off the month with a bang, rising in the wee hours of the morning on September 2nd. Time to wrap up our summer fun and make space for new projects, fresh ideas, forgotten 2020 goals and fall splendor. In one word, time for la rentrée! The rentrée is this very French phenomenon that goes well beyond the return to school or work after weeks of vacation. It's a bit like a New Years Day, but a much better one that does not take place in miserable cold January. The rentrée is full of optimism and new plans and opportunities. Everything seems more do-able in September. We don’t all literally have a new backpack filled with sharp new pencils, but mentally and emotionally, we do, and it feels so exciting! Here is how the Alliance might be able to contribute to the fun this month: Zoom Café Tuesday 1st September, 10:30-11:30am. Our rentrée sociale starts here and in French. You're welcome to join as a participant or a mere observer. If an observer, just mute your mic and/or send a quick note in the chat and let us know you're not quite ready to ponder about the meaning of life in French. Not this morning. Open to all. Sign up here to receive the Zoom link. Apéro Antivirus Friday 4 and 18 September, 5-6pm. Back to discussing the meaning of life in French, and with a smile! Some say having a drink or two truly helps... and philosophy is optional, really. Or accidental, rather. We're not sure. We can't remember. Open to all. Sign up here to receive a Zoom invitation. Apéro National Tuesday 8 September, 5:15pm, or Wednesday 9, 8:15pm. True to its name, this Apéro connects French learners from Alliance Française chapters all over the US. Levels A2 and up - if that sounds cryptic, click here for a better understanding of what those various levels mean . In French. For members only. Sign up and information here. Speak French Through your Lens! From 10 to 30 September Have you ever noticed how many French phrases are used in everyday English? Oh la la, so many! Capture the early fall light and match your creme de la creme shots to any of those expressions to enter our very first Photo Contest! Information here. Club de Lecture Tuesday 15 September, 10-11am. Ease into the rentrée litéraire with an entertaining mystery by Sébastien Japrisot: Compartiment Tueur. Action packed, complete with that magical light of Provence. In French. While the Club is for members only, non members are welcome to try it once. Sign up here. L'Oeil Ouvert Tuesday 22 September, 11-11:45am Do you miss our pre-Covid art tours at NCMA with Docent Diane Beckman? Rejoice! Diane is launching L'Oeil Ouvert; a monthly interactive Zoom discussion about a selection of artworks, curated especially for the Alliance! In French. This month's theme is La Provence. Free. For members only. Sign up here. Easy Cuisine: Macaron Workshop Friday 25 September, 1-2:30pm Cathy Monet's cooking workshops are back too! Price includes a mini-kit mailed to you before the workshop. Bilingual. Sign up here. Annual General Assembly Saturday 26 September, 12:30-1:30pm Members should have already received an email invitation for our annual General Assembly. As each year. we'll keep our members apprised of the Alliance's past and future goals. We will also vote for a new Board of Directors. The Zoom link will be emailed to all members the night before the Assembly. Uncorked: My Year in Provence Wednesday 30 September, 6-7pm A Zoom presentation by Paul Shore, author of Uncorked: My Year in Provence, studying Pétanque, discovering Chagall, drinking Pastis, and mangling French. The title says it all! Treat yourself to some belly laughter and fond reminiscing about your own past travels, real or imagined! More details about the presentation and registration coming soon. Are you sensing a recurring theme throughout our rentrée culturelle? That's right: September will be the month of La Provence! For the next months, we'll travel from one francophone region to another, sailing all seas through art, literature, history, cuisine and more. La Provence is a natural springboard for the journey, sitting as it does on the sparkling blue Mediterranean Sea, across from Africa and the Middle-East. All aboard! Last, but not least, La Rendrée des CLASSES starts on the week of September 21st. Sign up before September 10th and receive a 10% early bird discount! All classes are held online using Zoom. Information on levels, dates, rates and how to register here. If you wish to show your support for the Alliance, don't forget to purchase your AF face mask here. The proceeds will help us stay on target with our cultural programming. Enjoy the journey! The Alliance team [if !supportLineBreakNewLine] [endif]
