March Newsletter

March is here, with its early blooms and winds, shamrocks and taxes. It is Optimism Month and National Umbrella Month, which seem slightly at odds. But it's also International Mirth Month, so we should be laughing appreciatively for the next 31 days! Here's what else we will celebrate at the Alliance this month: EVENTS

  • Tuesday 3 March, 10:30am: Le Café is always a sure place to start with a smile. Open to all interested in a little chat in French. No registration required.

  • Friday 6, Saturday 7 & Sunday 8 March: International Festival of Raleigh Come check our Cultural Exhibit and Sidewalk Cafe along with dozens of other booths representing 50 countries! The Festival is a major fundraiser for both the Alliance and L'Ecole. More information about the Festival here.

  • Wednesday 11 March, 11am: North Carolina Museum of Arts : Pre-Bloom - a preview of the "Art in Bloom" selection, a guided tour in French with docent Diane Beckman. Art in Bloom is a unique celebration of art and nature where designers create flower arrangements to mimic the Museum's art collection. In this tour, we'll look at the masterpieces selected for this year's Art in Bloom. $10 for members, $15 for non members. Register here.

  • Sunday 15 March, 2pm: This month's Hike in French is hosted by fellow members Joe Paul and Alan at the Johnston Mill Nature Preserve in Chapel Hill. The 2.8 mile hike starts at their home. Register here for the address.

  • Tuesday 17 March, 10am: Club de Lecture: No et Moi by Delphine de Vigan. Winner of the prestigious Booksellers’ Prize in France, No and Me is a thought-provoking novel about homelessness and families - what brings them together and breaks them apart. At the Alliance. No registration required.

  • Sunday 22 March, 3 - 5 pm: Le Cercle de l'Alliance - our monthly potluck - will get together at a member's home in Chapel Hill. Register here for the address.

  • Wednesday 25 March, 7:15pm: Ciné-Club will screen My Afternoons with Margueritte, (La tête en Friche) that was cancelled last month. With Gérard Depardieu and Gisèle Casadesus, in French with English subtitles. Jeff Dermott will host the event at his home theater in Cary. Free for members. $5 for non-members. Register here.

  • Saturday 28 March, 2-4pm: Become baker of the week with Cathy Monnet's Easy Cuisine workshop about The Secret of French Macarons! Let's face it: these cookies are finicky. But Cathy's tips & tricks and foolproof recipes will come to the rescue. In North Raleigh. $40 for members, $50 for non-members. More information and registration here.

  • Upon request from some of our learners, we are introducing a new Specialty Class this month about French Pronunciation. If you don't want to get your "merci beaucoup" and "merci beau cul" mixed up, this class is for you, regardless of your level! This 2-hour class is held once a week for 2 consecutive weeks, on Tuesday 7 and 14 March. For maximum flexibility, the class is offered at 2 different times: 10:30am-12:30pm and 6-8pm. Information and registration here.

  • Because of the bad weather, we've had to cancel some classes that will be made up for later in March. For this reason we've pushed the Spring program until after the schools Spring break. The Spring Program will start on the week of April 13th for all group classes in Raleigh and Chapel Hill.

A few more important dates to keep in mind this month: March 20 is the International Day of Happiness and this year's theme is Happier Together, focusing on what we have in common, rather than what divides us. March 8 is International Women's Day and March 3rd is What if cats and dogs had opposable thumbs Day. Better lock their food up more securely that day. Happy March to All! The Alliance Team.
