with Barbara Basbanes Richter

In English
Wed. 21 October, 6pm

Join the Alliance Française de Westchester to learn more about Mademoiselle de Malepeire, a 19th century novel by Fanny Reybaud.

Our guest speaker, Barbara Basbanes Richter,  is releasing a brand new translation of this romance and murder mystery and will discuss the fascinating historical period depicted in this 1854 bestseller.

What was life like in France before and after the French Revolution? What was the role of women in French society at the time? Who was Fanny Reybaud, a bestselling author of the 19th century, then as famous as George Sand, but mostly forgotten today? What is the role of a translator, and how can they help us better understand the work of foreign authors?

After a presentation of the novel by our guest speaker, a Q&A session will give you the opportunity to learn more about these various topics.
